This year the Grade 8s and 9s will take English together. The English program for Grade 8 and 9 is designed to build upon skills and knowledge that students have acquired in the first year or two of junior high. Students will be working together during most lessons but will sometimes be separated by grade level to complete certain activities.

For the first week or so students in Grades 8 and 9 will be completing initial reading and writing assessments and will be reviewing some topics (paragraph writing, reading comprehension, etc.).

After this, we will be completing our first novel study. The book we will be reading is called "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. This is a very interesting book about a seemingly "perfect" society. A film adaptation has recently opened up in theatres. I think we will be having some very interesting discussions about the themes in this book. :)

Grade 7 English is designed to help students continue to build the knowledge and skills they began in Elementary Language Arts. This year we will be completing lots of different activities/units including: novel studies, short story unit, poetry, writing, research projects and independent reading.

To begin the year we will be completing initial assessments and reviewing some topics (paragraph writing, comprehension skills, etc.). After that, we will be starting our first novel study. The novel we will be reading is "Maniac Magee" by Jerry Spinelli. This is an excellent book and students in the past have really enjoyed it!

Wow! It's so hard to believe that Summer Vacation is coming to a close. I hope you all had a great back and are ready to get back to work. This is going to be a fantastic year!

This year I will be teaching the following course:

Grade 7 English

Grade 8/9 English

Grade 7 Science

Grade 7 Social Studies

Grade 8/9 Health

I am very excited to welcome the new grade 7s to Junior High and welcome back the Grade 8s and 9s! I know that this year will be full of lots of learning and fun! See you all on Tuesday!
